DOCTOR WEIRD # 1, RESEÑA POR MIKE W. BELCHER

¡Muchas gracias a Mike, que contribuyó además a redondear el número con este estupendo pin-up de mis ya añorados KNIGHTS OF JUSTICE!

I loved this story! Dr. Weird has been a favorite character of mine for quite some time. Big Bang Comics knows how to make a story hum with vibes of the past, but the enthusiasm of the present.

This story is a beautifully drawn, well told origin tale that is never brought down with exposition or telling too much. Dr. Rex Ward is a specter. A time traveler killed in the past before he was born.

He finds himself outside a castle not sure where he’s at. As he enters, he comes upon a singer that lets him in on his current state. Not sure of his current plight, Ward goes into the castle for answers.
Within the castle, he find a guide that takes him through stages that will prepare him for the days and years ahead. Since he was killed before he was born, he can’t move onto the afterlife. He has to come up with his own solution to his situation. He finds garments and tools that will enable him to become Dr. Weird.

Full of personality and heroic magic, Pedro writes Dr Weird with humanity and confusion as he comes to terms with his afterlife.

Joan Vives art is a sight to be seen. Lush, beautiful lines and color, makes Dr. Weird stand out.

All in all, a great back to basics story about how a hero overcomes adversity and arms himself with what he needs to be his true self. He entered the castle a stranger and now he’s it’s master.
In the second short story by Gary Carlson, Dr. Weird finds a man transformed into a living candle and racked with pain. He learns the man was messing with arcane forces and before he could attain real power, a hit man shot him and changed him into the inhuman creature.

After ending the man’s suffering, the Dr. finds his killer and a great mystical fight ensues. Again, great storytelling and art, give the reader a sense of adventure and danger.
I thoroughly enjoyed both tales and the comic has tons of extras like character files and pinups by a ton of great artists (and they even let me in on the pinup action).

¡No dejéis de leer la MILLERTON GAZETTE, el subtack de Mike sobre sus personaje MAN IN THE MASK!
