When we see the new interpretation of Aquaman take hold and repositioning Animal Man and Swamp Thing at the start of the line, which was very important to us.

Now, seeing Harley Quinn break out as a brand new character -- and we're proud that we try to challenge ourselves and grow.

That's an interesting question, because we're constantly examining what works and what doesn't work in the line, and we're always trying to improve on what we do. I think what happened is, we started so strong and there was so much push in getting those first storylines done, after the first year, we sort of stumbled a little bit out of the gate.

What happened was that we wound up telling stories that felt like rehashes. We put so much energy into feeling fresh and new at the start because a lot of the stories had these big changes. Then after a year or so we started to fall back into old habits in our storytelling. We took shortcuts in regards to just re-introducing characters without really rethinking them all the way through with a fresh set of eyes for the fresh new universe that it was.

So we made a couple of mistakes along the way, and it happens, because it's hard to change that much momentum and that much heat. But more importantly, what we realize now is that we made some missteps, and we're actually spending time at this moment making a lot of course corrections. And that's what's so great about Futures End. It's showing how we're still maintaining our characters and more importantly setting a tone and voice and a direction for us and for our talent to create as good of stories as we did at the launch of the New 52.

Things like Frankenstein and Grifter and Voodoo and things of that nature, which were really risky characters and risky chances for us to take, and we're very happy to do them. Even though they didn't work, we knew there was value in those characters. And that's why you see those characters in appear in Futures End. We think they brought a lot of value to the launch. They brought a lot of breadth and depth to the line of books, and a diversity to the line.

We didn't want to put them out and then forget about them. It was very important to make sure that they were prominent in other series, and that's why we put them in Futures End, to say that these characters, that even though they had cancelled books, are still valuable to us and will be an integral part of the DC Universe for five years and for the future.
